SUNY Sullivan faculty members have the primary responsibility of teaching and assessing student learning. Nursing faculty facilitate learning and learner development and socialization. Faculty duties include teaching, advising, working toward continuous improvement to pedagogy and discipline specific content and through service to the College through shared governance. The major objective of the instructor in the department of nursing is to develop the student professionally, ethically, and cognitively.

This position reports to the Director of Nursing, and to the Dean of Liberal Arts, Sciences and Health Sciences. It is classified as Faculty and the incumbent is a member of the Professional Staff Association.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Holds a current New York State Professional Nurse License.
• Holds a Master’s Degree in nursing and experience in areas of responsibility in which clinical competence is expected. Master’s certification in Nursing Education preferred.
• Meets SUNY Sullivan’s requirements for faculty appointment
• Familiarity with instructional technology for facilitating and managing online classes
• Excellent interpersonal skills as necessary for working with diverse groups of people with varying backgrounds.
• Must communicate effectively with students, staff, faculty, administrators and parents.
• Experience teaching in an accredited program

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Classroom and Skills Laboratory

1. Develops, plans, implements and evaluates the total curriculum and assigned course.
   1. Utilizes the philosophy of the college and the nursing program.
   2. Keeps accurate, up-to-date instructional records.
   3. Creates student learning experiences based on program and course learning outcomes.
2. Implements various teaching strategies appropriate to learner needs to achieve learner outcomes.
   a. Demonstrates knowledge and/or skills in the area being presented.
   b. Presents material in a clear, concise professional manner.
   c. Role models professionalism, critical thinking and reasoning skills.
   d. Utilizes evidence-based teaching practices.
   e. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity.
   f. Uses information technology skillfully to facilitate learning.
3. Advises, mentors, remediates students during office hours.
   a. Refers students to support and counseling services as needed
   b. Works to develop each individual learner.
   c. Acculturates students to the profession of nursing.

Clinical

Full-time faculty in the department of nursing may be assigned to a clinical rotation. Responsibilities include:

1. Collaborates regarding the identification and selection of clinical experiences assigned to students.
2. Evaluates all students’ progress, interprets records, reports, clinical assignments and anecdotal notes on a weekly basis.
3. Establishes a relationship with clinical facility staff and collaborates in planning clinical assignments.
4. Attends clinical site orientation programs and maintains current knowledge of assigned agency’s policies and procedures.
5. Teaches, guides, and evaluates students in the clinical area
6. Conducts pre and post conferences each clinical day.

Division and College

1. Collaborates with all members of the nursing faculty to identify levels of competencies expected of students, including standards for the admission, progression, and graduation of students.
   a. Attends and participates in all level meetings.
   b. Attends and participates in all department meetings.
2. Collaborates with all members of the nursing faculty in the preparation of and revision of course syllabus, clinical assignments, and evaluation tools.
   a. Advocates for changes to improve program.
   b. Develops unit tests, midterms, and final examinations and quizzes using evidence based methods.
   c. Chooses and orders course textbooks.
3. Develops effective working relationships with other faculty members and departments in the college.

Professional Development

Full-time faculty members in the department of nursing pursue continuous quality improvement in the full-time faculty role. Responsibilities include:

1. Participates in professional organizations for the purpose of bringing education, service and research findings together to improve health care.
2. Participates in professional development coursework; models life-long learning
3. Uses feedback gained from student, peer, and administrative evaluations to improve professional performance.
4. Mentors and supports colleagues.
