Apprentice Lineman I: $22.00/hour

Apprentice Lineman II: $24.56/hour

Apprentice Lineman III: $26.66/hour

Apprentice Lineman IV: $27.75/hour

Apprentice Lineman V: $30.43/hour

Apprentice Lineman VI: $32.91/hour

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

Work involves performing overhead and underground electric line construction and maintenance, as well as the operation and maintenance of equipment under the direction of a Lineman and/or Line Foreman.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Assists line crew in installing primary and secondary overhead and underground electric systems while learning the skills necessary to be a lineman.
  • Installs and connects transformers, transformer banks, oil circuit reclosers, and related equipment. Installs and connects capacitors, voltage regulators, conductors, and associated material. Installs and connects metering installations. Change tap on transformers as required.
  • Install underground conduit, conductor, equipment pads, equipment, elbows, terminators, equipment labels and URD marking systems without supervision.
  • Digs pole and anchor holes and sets anchors; sets, aligns, and frames poles according to specifications.
  • Responds to requests from linemen while working on energized lines and providing appropriate assistance as required.
  • Prepares work sites. Erects warning signs and secures areas. Maintains knowledge of and implements safety procedures.
  • Uses electric line construction equipment to include, but not limited to, stringing equipment, backhoes, derrick diggers, material handlers and trucks.
  • Efficiently and safely performs line work on a pole or in an aerial lift truck.
  • Inspects poles and lines. Troubleshoots electric customer service problems and distribution & transmission problems as part of a crew.
  • Performs electrical work under the direct supervision of a journeyman lineman.
  • Assures that trucks, tools, and working equipment are properly used and maintained. Adheres to established maintenance and service schedules for vehicles in accordance with approved policies and procedures.
  • Performs preventive maintenance as required. Washes trucks, load and unload equipment and materials on/from vehicles. Cleans vehicles, equipment, warehouse, and work area as required,
  • May trim trees and brush prior to new construction, during repairs of damaged lines, or as a part of routine maintenance.
  • Perform simple transmission and distribution switching (qualified lineman assistance)
  • Follow established safety protocols and procedures as outlined in the American Public Power Association Safety Manual.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of techniques, equipment, and materials necessary for construction and maintenance of distribution and service lines.
  • Knowledge of transformers, breakers, line assemblies, meters, regulators, and other equipment found in electrical distribution systems.
  • Knowledge and skill to perform first aid techniques, CPR, and pole top rescue.
  • Knowledge and skill to perform basic (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing) mathematical computations.
  • Verbal skills to communicate with supervisors, crew members, and consumers regarding technical or service info.
  • Develop working knowledge of power line construction standards and NESC clearance requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all supervisors, crew members, and consumers.
  • Ability to operate a variety of construction equipment safely and productively in traffic.
  • Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, diagrams, and maps.
  • Ability to complete basic reports and convey necessary information in written form.
  • Ability to be available to work nights, weekends, stand-by and emergency call-ins.
  • Ability to successfully complete TVPPA or equivalent Apprentice Lineman program.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency. A combination of equivalent education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
  • Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver's License and acceptable MVR with CDL Class A endorsement
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position works primarily in the field and is exposed to all types of weather conditions including temperature extremes and rainy environments. Outdoor setting involves all types of property and site conditions, including open spaces, timberlands, urban developments, flat and hilly terrain, building construction sites and road rights of way. Subject to outside weather/driving conditions.

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position (this list is not fully inclusive of the physical demands required of an Apprentice Lineman).

Works around low and high voltage wires, using hot sticks and insulated rubber gloves when appropriate. Works in confined spaces, such as underground vaults requiring entry though a manhole. Frequently lift, transport and/or move heavy objects in the performance of regular job duties. Changes position frequently and works in awkward positions. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and descending a stepladder may also be required. Required to stand for extended periods of time, sit while driving and/or attending meetings, and walk on uneven ground in all types of terrain. Required to push, pull, twist, reach and use finger dexterity to grip/handle tools, equipment controls, etc. Climbs in and out of buckets of aerial personnel-lift with tool belt, materials, and equipment.
